Oakland University’s Meadow Brook Hall is 3 mi. e. via Walton Blvd., then .3 mi. s. on Adams Rd., on the eastern campus of Oakland University. This 1920s Tudor Revival-style mansion was once the residence of Matilda Dodge Wilson and lumber broker Alfred G. Wilson. The 88,000-square-foot, 110-room home boasts a two-story ballroom, 24 fireplaces, hand-carved paneling and sculptured ceilings as well as many original furnishings and works of art. Knole Cottage, also on the premises, is a brick six-room playhouse built for Frances Dodge. It is furnished in the same style as Meadow Brook Hall. Visitors can walk through the various gardens; spring, summer and autumn provide the best viewing opportunities. Guided tours are available. Time: Allow 1 hour, 30 minutes minimum.
House tour $15; $10 (ages 62+); free (ages 0-12). Holiday Walk $20; $15 (ages 62+ Tues. and Thurs.); $5 (ages 3-17). Gardens free.
Hours: Guided house tours are given daily at 11:30, 12:30, 1:30 and 2:30, Memorial Day-Aug. 31; Mon.-Fri. at 1:30, Sat.-Sun. at 11:30, 12:30 1:30 and 2:30, rest of year. A self-guiding Holiday Walk is offered daily 11-5 (also Mon. 5-9), late Nov.-late Dec.; last admission 1 hour before closing. Closed major holidays.
