AAA Editor Notes
Detroit Zoo is at 8450 W. Ten Mile Rd. at Woodward Ave. One of the most modern zoos in the country, it features spacious, open exhibits. Designed to simulate natural environments, habitats are laid out over 125 acres of landscaped grounds. Highlights are a 4-acre great ape complex, a snow monkey area with a hot spring, a reptile house, a free-flight aviary and polar bear exhibits.

A miniature railroad carries passengers across the grounds. A hands-on learning center also is available. The Wildlife Interpretive Gallery features art and an indoor butterfly garden. The Wild Adventure Zone has a virtual motion-simulated theater offering a variety of shows and a 4-D theater featuring 3-D films enhanced with 4-D special effects. The 33,000-square-foot Polk Penguin Conservation Center houses 80 penguins of four species, and visitors can view the aquatic birds through the underwater gallery’s large window and two tunnels.

Picnicking is permitted. Food is available.
