Statue of José María Morelos is on Janitzio Island. It has been called “quite an accomplishment in ugliness.” The priest turned freedom fighter's raised arm tops the 130-foot-tall figure. A spiral staircase leads to the top; a balcony offering a panoramic view of the lake is in the cuff of his sleeve. The climb is arduous, and along the way the stairway walls are adorned with deteriorating murals depicting the man's life.
