Prospect House & Civil War Museum is 5 blks. n. of downtown at 403 Lake Ave. N. This 18-room, Georgian-style mansion was built in 1882 by Civil War veteran and Chicago transplant James “Cap” Colehour; after adding an addition onto the house Colehour opened it as a seasonal resort, one of the first in the region. Displays in the Civil War Museum on the lower level include rifles, ammunition, tents, buttons, posters and books.
A World War II exhibit features such items as U.S. and Japanese helmets, a naval officer's uniform, medals, ammunition, a naval chest and a Japanese battle flag, as well as photographs and newspaper articles.
