Split Rock Lighthouse Historic Site is off SR 61, 20 mi. n. of Two Harbors and 5 mi. s.w. of Beaver Bay, within Split Rock Lighthouse State Park. This National Historic Landmark stands atop a 130-foot cliff, towering above the shoreline of Lake Superior. The light station operated 1910-69 and still has its original third-order lens and clockworks. In addition to the lighthouse, visitors can see a restored keeper's home, a fog signal and other buildings. Exhibits are displayed in the visitor center. Guided tours are available.
Admission to lighthouse and buildings (May 15-Oct. 15) $10; $8 (ages 65+ and college students with ID); $6 (ages 5-17). Grounds and visitor center free rest of year.
Hours: Daily 10-6 (also visitor center 6-6:30 p.m.), May 15-Oct. 15; Thurs.-Mon. 11-4 (visitor center and grounds only), rest of year. Closed Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Christmas.
