Hull-Rust Mahoning Mine is 1.5 mi. n. on 3rd Ave. E. from the jct. of US 169 and SR 73. The mine is 8 miles long, 3.5 miles wide and 800 feet deep. A panoramic view of the pit is available from the mine's visitor center. Since ore shipping began in 1895, more than a billion tons have been removed from the site, said to be the largest open-pit iron ore mine in the world. Visitors can hop behind the wheel of a stationary 170-ton truck. A 15-minute multimedia presentation details mining activities.
