Blue Mounds State Park is 5 mi. n. on US 75. The park preserves 1,826 acres of prairie used in part to support bison. Numerous varieties of wildflowers and grasses provide a range of color in late summer. Blue Mounds also is one of the few places in Minnesota where cactus can be found—patches of prickly pear grow on top of the park's quartzite outcrops, blooming in late June and early July. Activities include bicycling, fishing, hiking and rock climbing. Pets on leash are allowed. Recreational activities are permitted. Camping is permitted. Picnicking is permitted. Time: Allow 1 hour, 30 minutes minimum.
A $5 state park vehicle permit is required to enter the park.
Hours: Park open daily 8 a.m.-10 p.m. Visitor center open Sat.-Sun. 10-6, Memorial Day-Labor Day. Office open Wed.-Sun. 9 a.m.-10 p.m., Memorial Day weekend-Labor Day weekend; 9-4, rest of year. Phone ahead to confirm schedule.
