Forestville/Mystery Cave State Park is 4 mi. s. of SR 16 on CR 5, then 2 mi. e. on CR 118 to the main entrance at 21071 CR 118. The 3,000-acre park encompasses forests of oak, basswood, ironwood and sugar maple interspersed with tall-grass prairie. Historic Forestville is a living-history village depicting 19th-century farm life. The park also offers 17 miles of cross-country skiing, hiking and horse trails. Mystery Cave is Minnesota's longest cave system. Guided 1-hour tours allow visitors to see stalactites, stalagmites, flowstone and two cave pools. On summer weekends a 1-hour Flashlight Tour and a 2-hour Geology Tour are offered, both of which explore less developed areas of the cave; participants must be able to carry a lantern, climb numerous steps and walk along uneven paths. Concrete walkways line the main route. The cave temperature is a constant 48 F; warm clothing and sturdy walking shoes are recommended. Sandals are not permitted. Pets on leash are allowed. Recreational activities are permitted. Camping is permitted. Picnicking is permitted.
Park admission $5 per private vehicle. Guided 1-hour cave tour $12; $7 (ages 5-12). Geology Tour $20. Flashlight Tour $13. Tour reservations are recommended. Children under 8 are not permitted on the Geology or Flashlight tours.
Hours: Park open daily 8 a.m.-10 p.m. One-hour cave tours depart daily 10-5, Memorial Day weekend-Labor Day; Sat.-Sun. 10-4, mid-Apr. to day before Memorial Day weekend and day after Labor Day through Oct. 31. Flashlight Tour departs Sat.-Sun. and holidays at 1:30, Memorial Day weekend-Labor Day weekend. Geology Tour departs Sat.-Sun. and holidays at 3:30, Memorial Day weekend-Labor Day weekend.
