Lake Vermilion-Soudan Underground Mine State Park is .5 mi. n. of SR 169 at 1302 McKinley Park Rd. It covers 4,000 acres along the shore of Lake Vermilion. Walking trails and snowmobile trails are on the park grounds. Within the park is the Soudan Underground Mine, Minnesota's oldest and deepest iron ore mine. Guided tours include a 3-minute elevator ride 2,341 feet down to the 27th level, an electric train trip through a 3,000-foot tunnel to an area where the last mining was done, plus views of the ore crushing area and the 90-foot-high head frame.
A part of the Vermilion Iron Range, the mine is 1.5 miles long, well ventilated and has a constant temperature of about 51 degrees Fahrenheit on level 27.
Guided tours are available. Picnicking is permitted.
