Lake Vermilion-Soudan Underground Mine State Park is .5 mi. n. of SR 169 at 1302 McKinley Park Rd. It covers 4,000 acres along the shore of Lake Vermilion. A walking trail and snowmobile trails are on the park grounds. Within the park is the Soudan Underground Mine, Minnesota's oldest and deepest iron mine. Guided tours include a 3-minute elevator ride 2,341 feet down to the 27th level, an electric train trip through a 3,000-foot tunnel to an area where the last mining was done, plus views of the ore crushing area and the 90-foot-high head frame.
A part of the Vermilion Iron Range, the mine is 1.5 miles long, well ventilated and has a constant temperature of about 51 degrees Fahrenheit.
Guided tours are available. Pet friendly (call for restrictions/fees.). Picnicking is permitted.
