Soudan Iron Mine is .5 mi. n. of SR 169 at 1302 McKinley Park Rd., within Soudan Underground Mine State Park. Covering 1,300 acres along the shore of Lake Vermilion, this is Minnesota's oldest and deepest iron mine. Guided tours include a 3-minute elevator ride 2,341 feet down to the 27th level, an electric train trip through a 3,000-foot tunnel to an area where the last mining was done, plus views of the ore crushing area and the 90-foot-high head frame.
A part of the Vermilion Iron Range, the mine is 1.5 miles long, well ventilated and has a constant temperature of about 51 degrees Fahrenheit. A walking trail and snowmobile trails are on the park grounds.
Pets on leash are allowed. Picnicking is permitted. Time: Allow 2 hours minimum.
