AAA Editor Notes
Indian Mounds Park is at 10 Mounds Blvd., e. of the downtown business district overlooking the Mississippi River. The mounds are believed to have been constructed as a chieftain burial place more than 2,000 years ago. At least 16 burial mounds originally sat on a high bluff, and many more were added by later cultures over the centuries. Among the interesting discoveries made during the mound excavations was a death mask—a skull covered with red clay meant to evoke an image similar to the living person's face.
Picnicking is permitted.
