William Carey University, 498 Tuscan Ave., was founded in 1906. The Chain Garden, featuring “The Risen Christ,” a 6-foot bronze statue, and the Missions Plaza and Tower are on the campus grounds. The Lucile Parker Gallery offers temporary exhibitions showcasing local artists, while the Sarah Ellen Gillespie Museum of Art houses a collection of 20th-century works by Mississippians. The Carey Center displays religious, cultural, scientific and historical artifacts highlighting the accomplishments of William Carey, an English Baptist missionary known as the “father of modern missions.”
