American Royal is 1 mi. w. from jct. 12th St. and Broadway, then .5 mi. s. on Genesee St. to 1701 American Royal Ct., following signs for Kemper Arena. American Royal began in 1899 at the Kansas City Stockyards as the nation's first purebred cattle show. From September through November, such events as livestock and horse shows, rodeos, barbecue contests and parades are held. A museum offers interactive displays relating to the agriculture and livestock industries, livestock judging and western lifestyle. Show clothing and memorabilia as well as a film detailing Kansas City history may be seen.
Note: The barbecue contest moved to Kansas in 2017. The museum and events are scheduled to relocate to Kansas in late 2018; phone ahead for updates. Food is available during events.
