National World War I Museum and Memorial, just s. of downtown at 2 Memorial Dr., is dedicated to collecting, preserving and interpreting the history of and artifacts associated with the first World War. The educational, thought-provoking displays and interactive exhibits include everything from posters, photographs, uniforms, archival films and vintage audio broadcasts to airplanes, artillery, weaponry, cannons, caissons, a 1917 model Harley-Davidson army motorcycle, an FT17 Renault tank and a simulated World War I trench.

Chronological displays and firsthand accounts from diaries trace the history of the war from its beginning to the armistice of Nov. 11, 1918. The 217-foot-tall Liberty Memorial Tower takes visitors to an open-air observation deck at the top for panoramic views of downtown Kansas City. Several fountains grace the landscaped grounds.

2-day ticket (includes museum and tower) $16; $14 (ages 65+, students and retired military with ID); $10 (ages 6-17); $8 (active military with ID and to all on Wed.). Ticket to tower only $5.
Sat. 9-5, Sun.-Fri. and Monday holidays 10-5, Memorial Day-Labor Day; Tues.-Sun. 10-5, rest of year. Closed Jan. 1, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, President's Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas and Dec. 31. Allow 2 hours minimum.
