Jefferson Barracks Historic Park is at jct. Grant Rd. and Kingston, about 10 mi. s. via the I-55 S. Broadway exit. The park's visitor center is at 345 North Rd. Established in 1826, the site was a supply post for troops in the West. A museum in the 1857 powder magazine depicts the history of the barracks, and the Ordnance Building presents changing exhibits. The laborers' house and 1851 stable have been restored. An overlook provides a view of the Mississippi River. More than 70,000 servicemen are buried in the park, one of the largest national cemeteries in the country. Picnicking is permitted. Time: Allow 1 hour minimum.

Hours: Daily 8 a.m. to half-hour after dusk. House and museum open Wed.-Sun. noon-4. Closed Thanksgiving.
