AAA Editor Notes
Lake McDonald is reached via Going-to-the-Sun Road, which runs along the eastern shore. Ten miles long and 1 mile wide, the lake is the largest in the park. Its shores are heavily forested, and impressive rocky summits rise 6,000 feet above. Lake McDonald Lodge, near the upper end of the lake, is the focal point for trails to Sperry Chalet, Gunsight Pass, Sperry Glacier, Upper McDonald Valley and the summit of Mount Brown. A cruise boat operates from the lodge Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. Boat rentals and naturalist programs are available at the lodge and at Apgar.
