Rocky Boy Indian Reservation is on US 87 in the Bear Paw Mountains. Established in 1916, the Chippewa Cree reservation is named for a Chippewa leader whose Indian name, meaning “Stone Child,” later was changed to “Rocky Boy.” Tours of historical sites are offered. Fishing is permitted in a number of well-stocked streams and ponds; a tribal license is required. Hiking trails are available. Bear Paw Ski Bowl is on the reservation.
Fishing license (valid for 2 consecutive days) $25 (nonresidents); $5 (Montana residents with ID). A conservation license fee ($8) may also apply. Rates may vary; phone ahead.
Hours: Ski area open mid-December to early April.
