AAA Editor Notes
Savenac Historic Tree Nursery is at 100 Savenac Creek Loop. Established in 1907, the fledgling nursery fell victim to the Great Fire of 1910. Given the great need for reforestation, it was quickly rebuilt and by the mid-1930s Savenac had become the country’s largest supplier of tree seedlings, raising more than 3 million annually. The visitor center, housed in the former administration building, contains historical photos of the nursery in its heyday.
The Mullan Road, built between 1859 and 1863, the first engineered road in the Pacific Northwest, passes through the site. In 1915 this was upgraded to the Yellowstone Trail, an early auto route. The interpretive trail crosses Savenac Creek via the Yellowstone Bridge.
A brochure outlines a self-guiding tour of the nursery grounds.
