AAA Editor Notes
Asunción Cathedral (Catedral de la Asunción de María) is at avs. Hidalgo and Morelos, about a block from the Borda Gardens. It was founded by Hernando Cortés in 1529 and is one of the oldest churches in Mexico. The cathedral was the focal point of activities by Franciscan missionaries in Far Eastern countries during the colonial era.

The interior was renovated in the 1960s in a spare, modern style, but remains of early frescoes can still be seen. At the back of the cathedral is the Chapel of the Third Order (Capilla de la Tercer Orden). Sculptures by Indian artists flank the atrium.
