AAA Editor Notes

La Tovara Boat Trip excursions depart from the boat launch at the bridge leading into town. This jungle trip along the La Tovara River in a motorized boat (panga) is a favorite of bird-watchers, nature photographers and fans of adventure tourism. The small boats (usually holding six passengers) pass through swampy lagoons, dense mangrove forests inhabited by herons, ducks, turtles, iguanas, crocodiles, fish and a great variety of birds. The itinerary often includes a stop at a small crocodile reserve where injured crocs are rehabilitated and babies are raised until they are old enough to be released back into the wild. Excursions can be arranged directly with local boat owners/guides. The best wildlife viewing is on a trip that departs early in the morning.
The fee is negotiable and starts at about $8 (U.S.) per person.
Hours: Round trips from the San Blas dock take between 2 and 3 hours, including the short stop at the crocodile reserve.
