Cataloochee is reached via US 276 through Cove Creek Gap, about 21 mi. n. of Waynesville, N.C. Formerly a remote but prosperous farming settlement, Cataloochee declined and its residents were displaced when the park was established in 1934. Several clues to the past remain, including a few homes, a school, a barn, a chapel and a cemetery. Elk, reintroduced to the park in 2001, now populate this highland valley known for its solitude, scenic vistas, good trout fishing and abundant wildlife. A self-guiding auto tour booklet detailing the area's history is available at a roadside box near the valley's entrance.

Camping is permitted.
