Willa Cather State Historic Site, 413 N. Webster St., honors the state's best-known writer. Guided tours through the interiors of several restored properties—Farmers and Merchants Bank (now a museum), Cather's Childhood Home, Harling House, Burlington Depot, St. Juliana Catholic Church and Grace Episcopal Church—begin at the restored 1885 Red Cloud Opera House. Cather's childhood home, described in several of her writings, is restored to period.
Grounds free. Seven-building guided tour $15; $6 (ages 5-12). Three-building guided tour $10; $5 (ages 5-12). Guided tour of one building $5.
Hours: Grounds Mon.-Fri. 8-5, Sat. 9-5, Sun. 1-5, Apr.-Sept.; Mon.-Fri. 8-5, Sat. 9-1, rest of year. Guided tours are given Mon.-Sat. at 9:30, 11, 1:30 and 3 (also Sun. at 1:30 and 3, Apr.-Sept.). Closed Jan. 1, Easter, July 4, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Christmas. Phone ahead to confirm schedule.
