AAA Editor Notes
“Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” Sign is in the center median of Las Vegas Blvd. S., half a mile s. of Russell Rd. Welcoming motorists to Sin City since 1959, this iconic neon sign—designed by graphic artist Betty Willis—has served as a backdrop for countless photos of giddy newlyweds, tipsy conventioneers and generations of tourists. Twenty-five feet tall, in the shape of a horizontally stretched diamond and topped with a red neon star, the vintage Googie-style sign stands on a patch of grass in the middle of the palm-lined median.
On the back (north) side are the words “Drive Carefully, Come Back Soon,” a twofold message for those departing Vegas. The sign was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009, its 50th anniversary.
Note: There is a small adjacent parking lot, also in the center median, that is accessible only from the southbound lanes of Las Vegas Boulevard; after passing the Russell Road intersection, move to the far left lane.
