Oxbow Nature Study Area is at 3100 Dickerson Rd.; from the jct. of US 395 and 2nd St. go 2 mi. w. on 2nd St., which becomes Dickerson. This large park along the Truckee River is laced with walking trails and has decks and wooden benches where visitors can observe native wildlife (beavers, raccoons, minks, muskrats, mule deer, California quail, western scrub jays) and plants (cottonwood and willow trees, cattails, milkweed and wild roses).

A footbridge crosses an oxbow—a U-shaped bend in the river—that is a habitat for frogs, turtles, snakes and red-winged blackbirds. A small visitor center at the entrance has taxidermy exhibits and is often staffed by a park ranger who can answer questions.
