AAA Editor Notes
Peppermill Resort Spa Casino is at 2707 S. Virginia St.; from US 395 take exit 64 (Moana Ln.). The Peppermill proves that first impressions aren't always accurate. It's located along a stretch of Virginia Street about 2 miles south of downtown that's littered with commercial sprawl. Outside, the fake Roman statuary and plastic red geraniums “planted” in window boxes are a bit on the tacky side, although the hotel's most recent, Tuscan-themed expansion added an upscale 17-story hotel tower, three new restaurants, a pool and EDGE Nightclub.
But step inside the casino and you enter another world—one that successfully replicates contemporary Vegas swank. The interior is dim, but it pulsates with lots of multicolored neon and shiny reflective surfaces. Video screens project images of everything from sultry runway models to exotic foreign destinations. A black mirrored ceiling gives it all a hip, vaguely edgy look. And the cocktail waitresses wear the sexiest outfits in town.
The slots here are considered to be on the looser side, and include older single payline classics as well as up-to-the-minute video poker machines, many offering progressive jackpots. The Luxury Poker Room includes a cushy lounge and a self-service soup and beverage station. At the Keno Lounge you can play the ancient Chinese betting game that's somewhat like a 24/7 lottery; it's next to Cafe Milano in a tucked-away (and thus quieter) corner of the casino.
The race and sports book has two 10-foot-wide theater screens and individual “box seat” tables with LCD monitors and Internet access. And kids aren't forgotten; there are motion simulators and loads of state-of-the-art video games at Game Lab!, on the third floor next to the parking plaza.
