Mount Washington Cog Railway is 6 mi. n.w. on SR 302, then 6 mi. n.e. to 3168 Base Station Rd. Opened in 1869, the historic railway bills itself as the first mountain-climbing cog railway in the world. Coal-fired steam and biodiesel-powered trains take passengers on a scenic 3-hour round-trip to the top of Mount Washington—the highest peak in the Northeast. The base station features a museum that has artifacts, historical displays and video presentations. Food is available. Time: Allow 3 hours minimum.
Train fares include admission to Mount Washington Summit Weather Museum. Steam train $75. Biodiesel train $69; $65 (ages 65+): $39 (ages 4-12); free (ages 0-3 on adult lap). Advance ticket purchase is recommended; all sales are final and no refunds or exchanges are issued.
Hours: Train departs two to 10 times daily on the half-hour beginning at 8:15, 9:15 or 10:30, late May-Oct. 31. Closed Thanksgiving. Phone ahead to confirm schedule.
