Mount Washington Auto Road, 1 Mount Washington Auto Rd., is reached via SR 16, about 8 mi. s. of Gorham. The scenic trip requires 30 to 45 minutes each way; frequent turnouts provide views. Low gear should be used both ways. Because of steep grades and sharp curves, driving instructions are available at the toll house and should be heeded. For those who prefer not to drive, guided tours are available with a 1-hour stop at the summit.
Note: For safety, towed trailers, motor homes, pickup campers, certain vehicles with full passenger loads, vehicles with a wheelbase longer than 161 inches or wider than 85 inches (including mirrors) are not permitted. Allow 2 hours minimum for the driving tour or the guided tour.
