The Fells Historic Estate and Gardens is 2.2 mi. n. on SR 103A. The Fells, which overlooks Lake Sunapee, was the early 20th-century summer estate of three generations of the Hay family. John M. Hay, a diplomat and writer, served as President Abraham Lincoln's private secretary and secretary of state under presidents William McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt. The estate includes a 22-room house; a rock garden with more than 600 varieties of alpine plants; nature trails for hiking and snowshoeing; and period gardens with roses, rhododendrons and azaleas. Pets are not permitted. Time: Allow 1 hour minimum.
$10; $8 (ages 65+ and students with ID); $4 (ages 6-17); $25 (family).
Hours: Grounds open daily 9-5. House open Wed.-Sun. and Mon. holidays 10-4, mid-June through Labor Day; Sat.-Sun. and Mon. holidays 10-4, Memorial Day to mid-June and day after Labor Day-Columbus Day.
