AAA Editor Notes
USS Albacore, off I-95 exit 7, then .2 mi. e. off Market St. in Albacore Park and Memorial Garden, was built in 1952 and served as an experimental prototype for modern submarines. Its radical hull design enabled it to set an underwater speed record that marked the beginning of the era of high-speed undersea fleets. From 1953 to 1972 the Albacore was used to test innovations in sonar, dive brakes and emergency escape systems. The Memorial Garden pays tribute to those killed in the line of duty in the submarine service. Self-guiding audio tours also are available.
