Franklin Mineral Museum is .5 mi. n.w. of jct. SR 23 and Franklin Ave. at 32 Evans St. Samples of minerals mined from the area are displayed at the museum, which features the Fluorescent Room, where ores and minerals produce brilliant colors under ultraviolet light. An adjacent mine replica demonstrates zinc mining. Artifacts, dinosaur footprints and fossils from around the world also are displayed. Visitors can prospect on site, dig for fossils and pan for gems during museum hours. Guided tours are available. Picnicking is permitted. Time: Allow 1 hour minimum.
Museum $7; $6 (ages 65+); $5 (ages 3-12). Rock collecting $8; $7 (ages 65+); $6 (ages 3-12). Additional collected rock charge of $1.50 per pound. Museum and rock collecting (up to 2 pounds) combination ticket $12; $10 (ages 65+); $8 (ages 3-12). Additional fee for fossil dig and gem panning.
Hours: Mon.-Fri. 10-4, Sat. 10-5, Sun. 11-5, Apr.-Nov.; Sat. 10-5, Sun. 11-5, in Mar. Rock collecting ends 30 minutes before closing. Closed Easter and Thanksgiving.
