Historic Speedwell, 333 Speedwell Ave., preserves the homestead estate of Stephen Vail, including the factory building where his son, Alfred, assisted Samuel Morse with perfecting the telegraph and Morse code. The complex includes an exhibit about the Speedwell Iron Works, built in the early 1800s, three farm buildings and three historic houses. A timeline of modern communication and an exhibit about the telegraph also are on view. Time: Allow 1 hour minimum.
$5; $4 (ages 65+); $3 (ages 4-16).
Hours: Tues.-Sat. and select Sun. 10-5, Apr.-June; Wed.-Sat. 10-5, Sun. noon-5, July-Oct. Guided tours of the Vail home, factory building and wheelhouse are available. Last tour begins 1 hour, 30 minutes before closing.
