Rutgers Gardens is s. on US 1 from SR 18, then e. to 112 Ryders Ln. Dating to 1927, the 50-acre gardens feature a diverse series of botanical collections, including flowers and vegetables, rhododendrons and azaleas, American hollies, evergreens, ornamental and shade trees, a terrace garden and a bamboo forest. The Frank G. Helyar Woods is a 41-acre old-growth forest with a marked trail.
Gardens free. Guided tours Mon.-Fri. $10; $8 (ages 65+); $5 (children). Guided tours Sat. $12; $10 (ages 65+); $5 (children). Reservations are required for guided tours.
Hours: Gardens daily 8:30-dusk. Guided 1-hour tours are offered Mon.-Fri. mornings and afternoons and Sat. mornings.
