Sterling Hill Mine Tour & Museum is .6 mi. w. on Passaic Ave. from jct. CR 517, then .1 mi. past Plant St. The entrance is on Passaic Ave., just under the railroad bridge. Visitors can learn about the mining process during a guided 2-hour walking tour through the last underground mine to operate in New Jersey. Stops include the mine, including “Rainbow Tunnel”; a 5,000-square-foot mining history exhibit hall; and the museum of fluorescence. Also available are the Rock, Fossil and Gem Discovery Centers as well as opportunities for mineral collecting. Time: Allow 2 hours, 30 minutes minimum.
$11 (includes tour fee); $10 (ages 65+ and military with ID); $8 (ages 4-12).
Hours: Daily 10-3, Apr.-Nov.; Sat.-Sun. 10-3, rest of year (weather permitting). Two-hour guided tours depart at 1 (also at 10 a.m., July-Aug.). Closed Jan. 1, Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Phone ahead to confirm schedule.
