New Jersey State Botanical Garden is off Sloatsburg Rd. at jct. Sloatsburg and Morris rds. in Ringwood State Park. The 44-room Skylands Manor is surrounded by 96 acres of formal and informal gardens and more than 1,000 acres of native woodlands. Clarence McKenzie Lewis built the Tudor-style mansion in the 1920s and collected flowering trees and plants from around the world to beautify the grounds. Marked trails wind through the gardens; annuals and perennials bloom from spring through the first frost. Cellphone/web tours are offered.
Garden and garden tours free. Guided manor tour $7; $5 (ages 13-18 and 62+); $3 (ages 6-12). Parking: Sat.-Sun. and holidays, Memorial Day weekend-Labor Day $7 (out-of-state residents); $5 (N.J. residents); free, all other times.
Hours: Gardens daily 8-8, in summer; otherwise varies. Guided garden tours are offered Sun. at 2, May-Oct. Woodland walks are offered on the third Sun. of the month at 1. Forty-five minute guided tours of the manor's first floor are offered one Sun. per month 11-3, Mar.-Nov.; phone ahead to confirm schedule.
