AAA Editor Notes

Cattus Island County Park is at 1170 Cattus Island Blvd. The island is actually a peninsula jutting into Barnegat Bay. The habitat in the 500-acre park is a quintessential transition zone between land and sea, with salt marsh blending into pine-oak uplands. The Cooper Environmental Center presents exhibits that relate to the area. Six miles of marked trails wind through the preserve, which also features a butterfly garden. Boat tours are offered in July and August. Note: The Cooper Environmental Center was closed at press time due to damage sustained during Hurricane Sandy. It is expected to reopen in fall 2016; phone for updates.
Free.
Hours: Park open daily dawn-dusk.
