Sandia Peak Aerial Tramway is off I-25 exit 234 (Tramway Road), then 6 mi. e. to 30 Tramway Rd. N.E. The 2.7-mile tramway, one of the world's longest, takes passengers above the deep canyons and spectacular terrain of the western Sandia Mountains in the Cibola National Forest. A Forest Service visitor center is in the upper tram terminal. Restaurants operate at the base and summit. Sandia Peak is a popular recreation spot. Skiers frequent the 10,378-foot peak from mid-December to mid-March. In summer 24 miles of trails are available for mountain biking. Bicycle rentals are available weekends and holidays, early July through Labor Day, and in October during the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta.
Round-trip tram fare $25; $20 (ages 13-20 and 62+); $15 (ages 5-12).
Hours: Trams depart every 20-30 minutes daily 9-9, Memorial Day weekend-Labor Day and during the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta; every 20-30 minutes Wed.-Mon. 9-8, Tues. 5-8, rest of year. The tram is closed for 10 to 12 days in Apr. and Nov. for maintenance; phone for details.
