AAA Editor Notes

City of Rocks State Park is 30 mi. n.w. via US 180, then 3 mi. n.e. on SR 61. Millions of years ago wind and water shaped volcanic rock into the curious monolithic formations that give this 680-acre park its name. The Mimbres Indians and Spanish conquistadors left evidence of their visits. A cactus garden, hiking trails, interpretive exhibits and visitor center also are featured. Camping is permitted. Picnicking is permitted.
$5 per private vehicle. Camping $10-$14.
Hours: Daily 7 a.m.-9 p.m. Visitor center open daily 8:30-noon and 1-3:30 during daylight saving time; 9:30-noon and 1-4:30, rest of the year (when staff is available). Phone ahead to confirm visitor center schedule.
