Ice Cave and Bandera Volcano is 25 mi. s.w. of Grants on SR 53, w. of El Malpais National Monument. A partially collapsed lava tube formed the cave, which contains perpetual formations of ice. At an elevation of 8,000 feet, the temperature never rises above 31 F. The dormant Bandera Volcano, which erupted 10,000 years ago with massive lava flows, rises above the mountain valley. Self-guiding tours depart from the trading post located a half mile south of SR 53.

Comfortable shoes are recommended. Gem stone mining also is available.

Picnicking is permitted. Time: Allow 1 hour minimum.
