Santo Domingo Pueblo is off I-25 exit 259, then 2.5 mi. w. Because of their proximity to the ancient Cerrillos turquoise mines, the Keresan artisans of Santo Domingo earned a reputation for fine jewelry, beadwork and mosaics. Their heishe beads are prized today. A community center offers visitors a glimpse into tribal life and traditions. Some 350 artists gather for an arts and crafts festival on Labor Day weekend.
The Church of the Pueblo of Santo Domingo dates from 1886 and replaced a mission that was carried away by Rio Grande floodwaters. Visitors can see historical records and paintings by Native American artists.
Photography, sketching and painting are not permitted.
