National Solar Observatory is on Sacramento Peak. At an elevation of 9,200 feet, this research facility conducts high-resolution observations of the sun. There are exhibits and interactive displays at the Sunspot Astronomy and Visitor Center, at the end of the Sunspot Scenic Byway (SR 6563). The observatory also offers views of the Tularosa Basin. A brochure and map are available for self-guiding tours. Guided tours are available. Time: Allow 1 hour minimum.
$3; $1.50 (ages 55+ and military with ID); free (ages 0-10); $10 (family, five or more members).
Hours: Daily 9-5, Memorial Day to mid-Oct.; Fri.-Sun. 9-5, rest of year. Guided tours are given daily, Memorial Day-Labor Day (weather permitting). Phone ahead to confirm schedule.
