AAA Editor Notes
Museum of the Moving Image, 35th Ave. and 37th St. at 36-01 35th Ave. in Astoria, chronicles the art, history, technique and technology of motion pictures, television and digital media. The museum occupies a renovated building on the campus of the historic Kaufman Astoria Studios, originally a 1920s facility used by Paramount Pictures. The museum's core exhibit, Behind the Screen, illuminates the moving image with more than a thousand film and television artifacts, including costumes, cameras and props; computer-based interactive experiences; commissioned installations; audiovisual materials; and demonstrations of equipment and techniques.
Visitors can try their hand at adding sound effects, creating animation and recording dialogue; they also can see how live television is edited in a control room. A 2011 renovation and expansion doubled the size of the museum and added two new theaters, new galleries, an education center and an outdoor courtyard.
