Vanderbilt Museum is 1.5 mi. n. of SR 25A to 180 Little Neck Rd. Overlooking Northport Bay, the 43-acre estate of William K. Vanderbilt II contains a Spanish Revival-style mansion, a marine and natural history museum, a planetarium and gardens with water and architectural features. The house is filled with original furnishings, family memorabilia, decorative arts, firearms, ethnic objects and natural history specimens. A highlight is a 3,000-year-old mummy purchased in 1931. The Marine Museum has one of the largest privately owned collections of pre-Atomic-Age marine specimens in the world. Note: Guided house tours are not recommended for ages 0-8. Guided tours are available.
$7; $6 (ages 62+ and students with ID); $3 (ages 0-12); free (active military with ID and up to five dependents). Mansion tour or planetarium day show additional $6. Planetarium night show $10; $9 (ages 62+ and students with ID); $8 (ages 0-12).
Hours: Tues.-Sat. 11-5, Sun. noon-5, late June-Labor Day; Tues. and Fri.-Sun. noon-5, day after Labor Day-late Oct.; Tues. and Sat.-Sun. noon-4, rest of year. House tours depart at 12:30, 1, 2, 3 and 4. Planetarium schedule varies; phone ahead. Closed major holidays.
