Whaling Museum and Education Center of Cold Spring Harbor, 301 Main St. (SR 25A), offers galleries, collections, self-guiding tours and films that tell the story of the whaling industry and its impact on the area. Displays include a fully equipped whaleboat, touchable whale bones and baleen, whaling implements, marine paintings, ship models and carved scrimshaw. Changing exhibits and a family activity room also are offered. Educational programs are offered most weekends and school holidays.
$6; $5 (ages 4-18 and 62+); $20 (family, two adults and up to four children ages 4-18); donations (Wed. 5-7, July-Aug.); free (active military with ID).
Hours: Daily 11-5 (also Wed. 5-7, July-Aug.), Memorial Day-Labor Day; Tues.-Fri. noon-4, Sat.-Sun. 11-5, rest of year. Closed major holidays. Phone ahead to confirm schedule.
