Built around 1810 by Walt Whitman's father, the farmhouse where Whitman was born in 1819 is also where the poet spent his childhood years. Guided tours describe what family life was like at the time and showcase period furnishings. The modern interpretive center features a pictorial timeline of Whitman's life with more than 120 portraits and original manuscripts, including his book of poetry, “Leaves of Grass.” The site's 1.5 manicured acres also feature nature trails and a building housing changing exhibits.

Guided tours are available. Picnicking is permitted. Time: Allow 30 minutes minimum.
