New Museum of Contemporary Art, 235 Bowery, is New York's only museum devoted exclusively to contemporary art. Exhibits present the newest art and ideas by emerging, international and under-recognized artists. The museum reopened in a new, state-of-the-art facility—the city's first new art museum to be constructed from the ground up below 14th Street—in December 2007. The building, designed by Japanese architects SANAA, resembles seven silver boxes precariously stacked upon one another. Guided tours are available. Food is available. Time: Allow 2 hours minimum.
$16; $14 (ages 65+); $10 (students with ID); by donation (Thurs. after 7 p.m.); free (ages 0-18).
Hours: Wed.-Sun. 11-6 (also Thurs. 6-9 p.m.). Guided tours depart Thurs. and Sat.-Sun. at 12:30 and 3, Wed. and Fri. at 12:30. Closed Jan. 1, Thanksgiving and Christmas.
