AAA Inspector Notes
A New York landmark since 1904, this appealing property offers style at a grand level. When combined with contemporary luxury and attentive service, it is in a rarefied, supreme class altogether. Built by John Jacob Astor IV as a sister property to the Waldorf Astoria, Astor went down with the Titanic a few years after his hotel opened. The property changed hands a number of times before Sheraton finally acquired it over half a century ago. The landmark King Cole Bar, with its priceless mural painted by Maxfield Parish, is well worth a visit as it was there that the Bloody Mary cocktail was launched at the end of Prohibition. Among the famous guests were Salvador Dali and John Lennon. The former Beatle composed his classic song "Happy Christmas War is Over" in one of the rooms during the late 1960s. Smoke free premises. 238 units, some two bedrooms. 19 stories, interior corridors. Accessibility (Call).
