A New York landmark since 1904, this appealing property offers style at a grand level. When combined with contemporary luxury and attentive service, it is in a rarefied, supreme class altogether. Built by John Jacob Astor IV as a sister property to the Waldorf Astoria, Astor went down with the Titanic a few years after his hotel opened. The property changed hands a number of times before Sheraton finally acquired it over half a century ago. The landmark King Cole Bar, with its priceless mural painted by Maxfield Parish, is well worth a visit as it was there that the Bloody Mary cocktail was launched at the end of Prohibition. Among the famous guests were Salvador Dali and John Lennon. The former Beatle composed his classic song "Happy Christmas War is Over" in one of the rooms during the late 1960s.

family with young children
Pros: The rooms were lovely.
Cons: The front desk staff (and management) at check-in was abominable, and not up to par for the St. Regis. I booked through an online booking agent instead of directly, and it was clear that the staff are not trained in this process and/or instructed to disfavor these guests. In addition to my husband and I and our two 8 year old sons, we had my parents with us. The front desk did not have complete registration information, and I had to fish around for the confirmation email. Next, they gave me a hassle about a rollaway bed, saying they did not have enough. Absurd. A hotel with rates in the range of $1000 per night without an adequate supply of rollaway beds, particularly at Christmas when families are visiting New York? When they finally conceded that they had one, they said it would be in the room when we arrived after dinner. When we got back to our room at 10:00 p.m. it was not. Infuriating and unacceptable lack of attention to detail. On top of that, the wireless was not working. I had to get online to do something for work, and found myself on the phone twice upon arriving to my room: first to inquire about the bed, and second to get a special access code for the internet. I have traveled all over the world, and stayed at some of the best properties. I expected better from the St. Regis. My family lives in NJ and each year we come in after Christmas to see a show and the Rock Center Tree. We pick an iconic NY hotel in which to spend the night. We will not pick the St. Regis again, and I would hesitate to select a Starwood property for my next business or leisure trip after this experience. If you are not providing exceptional service at the St. Regis, I can only speculate what the service is like at less expensive properties.

Pros: The bed is amazing, very comfortable, clean room,
Cons: I went there with my friend and we requested two queen size beds since we booked the hotel. They didn't follow my request and the manager that night was very rod in dealing with that and she wasn't cooperative with us. I had to call booking for that.
Pros: concierge is very helpful and friendly.
Cons: The bathroom wasn't 100 percent prepared before my check in
