AAA Inspector Notes
Mas is a French Provençal word meaning 'farmhouse' and this secret little gem in Greenwich Village may sometimes be hard to find with the lack of an eye-catching sign but it is just what the 'in the know' New Yorker crowd is looking for. The menu consists of only the freshest in-season meats, fish, and organic vegetables from local farms. The six-course chef's tasting menu is the best way to sample a variety of small portioned favorites. They may include the roasted sea scallop and sweet corn soup with hon-shimeji mushrooms, local corn and tarragon or the poached lobster and truffled risotto with cauliflower, carrots and kohlrabi in a lobster-carrot butter. At the end of most meals, the pastry chef will surprise you with a treat. On one particular evening it was a pair of delicious house made blueberry marshmallows. The airy sweet was the perfect note to end an extraordinary meal. The wait staff is knowledgeable and forthcoming with helpful recommendations. The stylish decor compliments the upscale cuisine. The modern dining space is accented with a central communal farm table mixed with high end wood finishes and mirrored wall accents. Though tables are tightly packed the space still exudes an air of comfort and luxury with soft pillows lining the banquettes, high end Guy Degrenne glass stemware and riveting show plates from London.
