AAA Inspector Notes
From the gritty backstreets of Lower Manhattan comes this spot with a different take on classic French food. The name, when translated, is appropriate, but this rebel has a cause—to transition elegant French-inspired food, décor and service to a new generation. The restaurant offers a casual American take on the genre, with prices kept down by shunning costly standard accompaniments. In the end, it is about the food, and here, with superb wines paired in tandem, it is winning hand-off. The menu is purposely kept minimal to keep items fresh. Teaming with an excellent sommelier who is an expert in discovering phenomenal wines, the chef Daniel Eddy creates a fusion of robust American flavors with French restraint. The plates are on the small side and lead to a party enjoying multiple distinct standouts. Try the colorful sea scallops with green apple, monkfish, lamb tartare or a simple yet satisfying chicken breast.
