Dining by the iconic Howard Chandler Christy painted wall-murals of heavenly nymphs at this famed small eatery is sublime, and a charming experience.
AAA Inspector Notes
Historic. The landmark ‘Cafe des Artistes”, first opened in 1917, can be found here, as the historic dining room re-emerged with a new name - and with the angelic wall murals of frolicking nymphs remaining proudly intact. Refined service in a renewed, sublime interior brings across a menu of Southern Italian as well as classic selections, such as Dover sole. One of the most romantic restaurants in town, the atmosphere is spirited, and still slightly risqué - which is no easy feat after over 100 years. Attached to a historic artist's residence building next to Central Park, the address is a film set favorite of Woody Allen, who has used the eatery as a location in his films, as have others. It is not uncommon to see some other familiar faces from cinema, from business, the arts or political world eating at this storied spot, as it is a classic and truly “insider” New York spot.
