Niagara Falls is in the Niagara River between New York and Ontario. The falls are divided into three cataracts separated by islands. Horseshoe Falls, on the Canadian side, is the widest. Bridal Veil, the middle and smallest falls, surges between Goat and Luna islands. And the 184-foot American Falls is the highest.

While there are many opportunities to gaze at this spectacle, it was not always so. Mills and plants once blocked public access, and by the late 1860s most of the land around the falls was privately owned by entrepreneurs. In 1885 the falls were reclaimed for public enjoyment through the creation of the Niagara Reservation, the nation's first state park.

Excellent views of the river and falls are available from several vantage points within Niagara Falls State Park. Each night the falls are illuminated for 2.5 to 3.5 hours after dusk. A variety of guided sightseeing tours also is available.

Guided tours are available.
